Carousel the Musical

Carousel - The Savoy Theatre

A revival of a groundbreaking show first staged in 1945, Carousel is a tragic romantic fantasy that explores enduring social issues against the backdrop of the rapid industrialisation in the 1870s, a fairground carousel and heaven itself.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's most celebrated musicals, Carousel was originally an adaptation of the 1909 play Liliom by Ferenc Molnar. Carousel opened on Broadway in 1945 and ran for 890 performances, The show has since enjoyed several award-winning revivals and has been declared the "best musical of the 20th century" by Time magazine. A heart-wrenching romantic fantasy, Carousel tells the tale of Julie, a young millworker and her tempestuous relationship with fairground barker, Billy. Jealousy and violence damage their budding relationship. When Billy dies in a botched robbery, leaving Julie alone and pregnant he is given once more chance by the heavenly gatekeeper to put things right.
